【Lesson 10】 A Jackal Met a Man for the First Time

Once there was a deer ❶( )（関係代名詞） lived in the jungle in Indonesia. When he was young, the deer was strong and fast, but now he was old and tired. Most of the day, and all night, he ❷( ) under the trees ➌( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) the jungle.
昔、インドネシアのジャングルに住んでいる鹿がいました。彼が若い時、鹿は強くそして速いでした。でも、今では彼は年をとって疲れていました。ほとんどの昼間、そして一晩中彼はジャングルの➌真ん中の木の下で❷寝ていました。
Usually, the deer slept well. However, one night, he suddenly ❶( ) ( ) He wasn’t alone. A jackal was lying next to him!
たいていは、鹿は良く眠りました。しかし、ある晩、彼は突然❶目が覚めました。彼は一人ではありませんでした。ジャッカルが彼の隣に横になっていました。
“Hello,” said the jackal, ❶( )(前置詞) a hungry smile. “And good bye. I’m going to eat you!”

“Well,” said the jackal. “Say something! ➌ ( ) you scared?”
『こんにちは。』お腹をすかした笑顔でジャッカルは言った。 『そしてさようなら。僕は君を食べるつもりだ。』 『ああ、だめだ！』鹿は思った。『どうやって❷逃げることができるだろうか。私は年をとって疲れている。 私は逃げることができない。慎重に考えなければ。』
『ああ、』 ジャッカルは言った。『何か言えよ！ ➌怖くないのか？』
“Oh, yes. I’m scared!” said the deer. “But ❶there is ( ) ( ) I can say. You are the fastest and the strongest and the most dangerous animal ➌( ) ( ) ( ). Of course you are going to eat me.”
“The fastest and the strongest and the most dangerous?” asked the jackal. He was very proud, so he ➌( ) good when the deer ❹( ) him.
『ええ。そうです。私は怖いです。』鹿は言った。『❶でも私には言える事は何もありません。 あなたは❷私が知っている中で、最も速く、もっとも強くそして最も危険な動物です。 もちろんあなたは私を食べるでしょう。』
『最も速く、最も強く、最も危険？』ジャッカルは尋ねた。彼はとても誇りに思った、だからかれは鹿が彼の事を❹褒めた時➌気分がよかった。

“Oh, yes,” said the deer. “❶( ) ( ) man, of course.”
“What!” shouted the jackal. Now he wasn’t happy. “An animal stronger than me? ❷( )! What kind of animal is this ‘man’?”
“He lives ➌( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) the jungle, “ explained the deer. “He’s a strange animal with no ❹( ) hair and only two legs.”
The jackal laughed. “Two legs? No hair? Why is he so strong?”
“Well,” replied the deer. “He has ➎( ). He can make things. Like hats… and shoes … and er … guns.”
『ええ、はい。』鹿は言った。『もちろん、人間❶を除いては。』
『なに！』ジャッカルは叫んだ。 今は彼は面白くなかった。『僕より強い動物？ ❷ありえない！ この“人”というのはどんな種類の動物なんだ。』
『彼はジャングルの➌端に住んでいます。』鹿は説明した。『彼は❹体毛が無く、たった２脚だけの足を持った奇妙な動物です。』
ジャッカルは笑った。『２本の脚？毛がない？なぜ彼はそんなに強いんだ？』
『ええっと、』鹿は答えた。『彼には➎知恵があります。彼は物を作ることができます。帽子とか、靴とか、、、ええっと、ガンとか』

“What are hats, shoes and guns? And they like toys?” ❶( ) the jackal. He didn’t really know. But he said “I’m not afraid of hats, shoes and guns!” I want to see this ‘man!’ I don’t think he is so great. I’ll kill and eat him!”
Now, the deer was old and tired, but he had wisdom, too. ➌This was the ( ) ( ) he was looking for.
“All right, Mr. Jackal. Come with me, and I’ll show you. There are many men at the edge of the jungle. You can eat them, and then eat me.
『帽子、靴、ガンとはなんだ？ それらはおもちゃの様なものか？』ジャッカルは❶不思議に思った。彼は本当は知らなかった。でも、彼は言った。『僕は帽子も靴もガンも怖くない。僕はその‘人間’を見てみたい。彼はそんなに素晴らしいとは思わない。僕は彼を殺して食べてやる』
今では鹿は年をとって疲れているが知恵を持ってもいた。➌これは彼が求めていたチャンスだった。
『わかりました。ジャッカルさん。私と来てください。そしたらあなたにお見せします。ジャングルの端にはたくさんの人間がいます。あなたは彼らを食べることができます。それから私を食べる事が出来ます。』

The two animals walked to the edge of the jungle. Now it was morning. On the road near the jungle, there was an old man ❶ ( )(関係代名詞)was taking his morning walk. He was very old and he couldn’t walk without ❷ a ( ) ( ).
“Is that a man?” laughed the jackal. “I’ll kill him ➌( ) ( )!”
“No, no,” said the deer. “It’s like a man, but look! He has three legs, not two!”
The old man walked away.

“Is that a man?” laughed the jackal. “I’ll eat him now!”
２匹の動物はジャングルの端まで歩いた。今は朝だった。ジャングル近くの道路で朝の散歩をしている老人がいた。彼はとても年をとっていて❷杖なしでは歩くことができなかった。
『あれが人間か？』ジャッカルは笑った。『➌すぐに彼を殺してやる！』
『いいえ、』鹿は言った。『人間の様ではあるがでも見てください。彼は３本の脚をもっています２本ではありません。』老人は歩いて去っていった。❹次に小さな帽子をかぶった若い少年が来た。
『彼が人間か？』ジャッカルは笑った。『今、食べてやる！』
“Yes, and no,” said the deer. “That’s a baby man. He has just ❶( ) ( ) ( ) an egg. Look at that piece of ❷( ) on his head.”
The young boy walked away.
Now, ➌the next person ( ) came along the road was a man. And this man had a gun.”
“Ah,” thought the deer, “This is the man that I was waiting for.” That’s a man!” he shouted. “Quickly! Kill him and eat him. Then you can eat me.”
『そうでもありますが違います。』鹿は言った。『あれは人間の赤ちゃんです。 彼は❶卵から今生まれたばかりです。見てください彼の頭の上の❷卵の殻のかけらを』 若い男の子は歩き去った。
今、道路をやってくる次の人は男の人だった。そして彼はガンを持っていた。『ああ、』鹿は思った。『これが私が待っていた人だ』 『あれが人間です。』彼は叫んだ。 『急いで！彼を殺して食べて！ それからあなたは私を食べれます。』

When the ➌( ) old deer saw that the jackal was ❹( ), he walked back into the jungle. “Poor, proud Mr. Jackal,”he said. “He was stronger than me, but I have wisdom, just like the man. And I can use it!”
ジャッカルは道路から飛び出し、人を❶攻撃しようとした。“バン！”男は速かった。彼はジャックを❷完全に撃ち殺した。➌賢い鹿が、ジャッカルが❹死んだのを見た時、彼はジャングルに歩いて帰っていった。『哀れな、誇り高いジャッカル君。』彼は言った。『彼は私よりも強かった。しかし、私には知恵がある。ちょうど人間のように。そして私はそれを使えるのだ』
